Fuck Flattering: This shirt dress will prove that you don’t need an hourglass figure

Screen Shot 2017-05-04 at 12.09.44 AM.png

As a plus-size woman, I was constantly told to wear clothes that would flatter my body. That mostly meant creating the illusion of having an hourglass shape. I was given my first full body shapewear before I hit my teens. Clearly being anything but an hourglass shape was wrong.

I missed out on so many outfits because it wasn’t “flattering.” I have been able to run away from that mindset and live the most fashionable life I can but occasionally those thoughts still linger in the back of my head.

When I was shopping for my trip to Puerto Rico I came upon this embroidered dress. I could picture myself walking down the colorful streets of San Juan looking good as hell but the self-doubt had me thinking twice about it. I was afraid the shapeless fit of the shirt dress would make me seem wider and fatter. I slept on it for a few days before I decided to buy it.

Screen Shot 2017-05-04 at 12.10.05 AM.png

I started to question why I thought I needed to fake an hourglass shape. Why is looking fat the worse outcome? I still have a lot of self fat-shaming to unlearn but I’m glad I went with my gut on this one (no pun intended) and bought the shirt dress. I can’t let societies idea of what a ‘good body’ looks like keep me away from a great outfit.

Fashion over fear always.

I posted a photo of myself in lingerie and learned to love my full belly

Ever since I started blogging I constantly get asked: “How did you become so confident?” And like a broken record, I always reply that I did it by challenging and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

I always encouraged people to do something that scares them. The more you push yourself out of your comfort zone the more confident you become. But lately, it began to feel like a lie.

Before blogging I absolutely hated myself and my body. I spent years unlearning the self-hate I had.  I later met people in my life that encouraged me to feel comfortable no matter what size I was.  I tried various ways and techniques to help me feel confident.

Surrounding yourself with people who encourage you emotionally, mentally and physically is extremely important.

One of the things that worked for me was to look into a mirror and compliment my body and remind myself that I was beautiful because I said I was.

I then pushed my myself out of my comfort zone by wearing crop tops and two-piece swimsuits. Knowing that my body would be picked at and criticized by strangers made this so scary.

Screen Shot 2017-04-30 at 1.11.03 PM.png

It was nerve-wracking but I knew that I had to do it.  My palms would get clammy and my heart would beat so fast I was practically working out.

After a while, that lost its enchantment. I no longer feared what others would say about my body. I was playing it safe. How could I preach something I wasn’t doing?

I knew I needed something that was going to shake me and challenge my self-confidence.

While I was away with Catherine’s on a mini vacay in Savannah, I was pushed out of my comfort zone and I did something I had been avoiding for years.

Screen Shot 2017-04-30 at 1.58.56 PM.png

They’d asked me to take some pictures while wearing only my lingerie. I knew ahead of time I was going to do it but it wasn’t until I started shooting that it hit me. I was going to be practically naked online for millions of people to see.

We spent a good 15 minutes shooting me in my underwear and having Lydia Hudgens, the photographer, compliment me and hear the other girls say how amazing it looked made me feel like a true goddess. I got so hyped and loved the images that I dragged Kellie Brown to take a picture in her undies too!

Kellie suggested that we post the picture on Instagram since we looked so hot.  I nearly shat on my brand new Catherine’s underwear.

I sat at the dining table with my girlfriends – biting my nails to the nubs –  while they encouraged me to do so. This was the scariest thing I had done in years. After remembering how important it is to see bodies that are not conventionally acceptable by society I decided to hit publish.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I needed to be that example for young girls like me who hated their bodies because their bellies were bigger. I needed to be the role model I needed when I was younger.

Even within the body positive world where we claim to be accepting of all bodies, it tends to neglect women who look like me. We prefer to showcase bodies that are flattering. The truth is that we don’t all have a small little waist and big butts.

I recently saw the final products and I am so happy I did it.

When I was looking at the picture before posting all I could focus was on how big my stomach was. But my body is as sexy and as valuable as any other body.

The only plus-size fringe skirt you need

About a month ago Fashion to Figure popped into my (work) neighborhood with a pop-up shop and of course, I went crazy. I spent a good hour going through their packed racks and left with two of my now favorite skirts. I’m wearing a 3X and even though it doesn’t stretch it is comfortable AF. Don’t be surprised if you see me wear this all summer long.

The body positive bag all Latinx need

If there is anything you can say about Latinx is that we find so many euphemisms for everything and anything. I can think of at least 20 different ways to call someone stupid or beautiful. Our body fat is not an exemption to the rule.

Growing up in New York City I have learned so many ways to refer to my muffin top and body rolls. In Ecuador, we call them “guata,” my Dominican friends call them “chichos,” and my Mexican friends called them “lonjas.” The options were endless.

One of my followers recently told me about a tote bag she was very proud of and wanted me to sport around. Once I saw the tote I knew I had to have it.There is no better way to remind myself to love my “guata,””chichos,” or “lonjas” than by wearing a bag that told me so.

Let me know what funny euphemisms you have for your muffin top and other body parts in the comment section or on my Facebook page here.

The coat I will never stop wearing

Wearing a (faux) fur jacket automatically makes me feel like a complete bad ass. I’m known for bailing on parties to go watch a movie while snuggling my dog and eating sunflower seeds. This has made it really hard to create this bad ass persona I’ve always wanted. But, recently I was introduced to this amazing faux fur jacket from Torrid and things have never been the same.

Torrid sent this amazing faux fur jacket and I have been wearing it a lot. You can literally wear them with anything and it automatically makes you look so well put together.

This jacket definitely forced me to tap into my inner baddie and be the boss ass bitch I’ve always known I could be. At least until I took it off.

What clothing item in your closet makes you feel bad and bougee?

My favorite way to style a summer dress for winter

When I started blogging I thought I would go broke in less than a month. I put so much pressure on myself to make sure I never repeated my outfits. Sadly, many of us can not afford that luxury.

I usually do two big shopping sprees in a year. The first shopping spree covers my outfits for Fall and Winter and the second for Summer and Spring. I found different ways to wear my clothes to make them look different and make sure I can wear them as much as I can. This is a great way to make the most out of your wardrobe. Sometimes I luck out and I can use certain items all year long. This gorgeous summer dress from Lane Bryant is the perfect example.

I bought this dress in the summer and had it on repeat. Summer is over but I still wanted to wear the dress so I decided to layer it over a simple black turtleneck.

The thigh high boots are a great way to keep my legs warm when I wear dresses. To finish the look I draped my favorite leather jacket from ASOS. I love when I make my clothes work all year long. Don’t be surprised if you see me wearing this dress next season.

Ain’t nobody made out of money.

Since I re-wear my clothes all year long they aren’t always available for you to shop but check the links below for some similar items.

What is your favorite styling tip? Let me know in the comments or over on my Facebook page here.

3 days in heaven

I told you I wouldn’t be far for too long!

For those of you who have been following me on my Instagram, you might have already seen some pictures from my little getaway to Cape Cod.

So, Catherine’s kidnapped me, Alexandria and Loey for three days and two nights. It had been quite a while since my last vacay.  This was much needed.

On my first day, Kellie Brown gave me a tour of the place and fed me until I couldn’t have another bite.

Just looking at this picture makes me hungry. Feed me, Kellie Brown, feed me!

This window entry was probably one of my favorite places to chill at. We took turns sitting there. #ComfyAF

Our view was much more than I could have ever asked for. It was my first time ever at Cape Cod.

I did not waste time and I put my bathing suit on. Normally, this isn’t a swimsuit I would wear but I am so glad I did. I was feeling adventurous when I picked it out.

Look at all those pretty colors! I am actually truly obsessed with this bathing suit.

I had never felt so comfortable in a swimsuit in my life. The first time I wore a swimsuit I decided to go for a two-piece. This time, my swimsuit had color in it! It’s all about the baby steps you can take to make yourself much bolder and confident every day.

I wore the swimsuit until it was time to go to bed. Yup, I was that comfortable in it.

Day 2

After a quick first day, I was more than excited to see what they had planned out for us. Did I mention all activities planned for us were a secret?!

After a quick breakfast, we went on a sand dune tour. JESSICATWO_4

And of course, we stopped to take some pictures of my dress! This was probably my favorite look of all.

Alex, Loey and I spent the tour laughing and taking pictures. To be honest, I did not hear half of what the tour guide was telling us. I was just there to relax and play in the sand. Like the 5-year-old that I am.

After jumping around like a crazy maniac in the sand with Alex, we went to the center of the city and grabbed some food. Oh yeah, and some yummy ice cream!

Once we got home we pretty much ran to our rooms and put our swimsuits on. Like they say in spanish “en el mar la vida es mas sabrosa!”

This was our last full day here. We were surprised with a sailing trip!

We were all pretty tired from the full day. The sailing trip was a perfect touch to sooth us down.

I will say that I am a boss ass bitch. I volunteered to take pictures at the edge of the boat.  Did I mention that I can’t swim? LOL

It was oooooh sooooo worth it. I look hella good in this shot.

Day 3:

On the last day of the best getaway ever, we just chilled by the porch, and took in the wonderful view.

Thank you guys for reading. Let me know which look was your favorite?

On an all red mood

Hi guys! Its been a while. If you haven’t been following me on Instagram then you might not know why I haven’t been blogging lately. I started a super cool gig as the fashion and body positivity reporter. The site is called Revelist. Its been such a great learning experinece for me. I work with extremely smart and powerful women that push me to be the best that I can. I’ve been working hard and have been doing my best to do the curve community proud. Since I’ve been working so hard I decided it was time for me to play hard, or at least try.

To get my mind of some stress and because it was much needed, I went shopping. I met up with my dear friend Liesl Binx. I had such a great time. I cant wait to go shopping out again. It had been a while and I forgot how fun that can be. Uh-oh I smell a bad habit coming back.
